James (Jim) Sylph graduated as a Chartered Accountant in the north of England before moving to Canada in the late 1970's. He has worked for a number of accounting firms, including Collins Barrow/Moores Rowland International and was a partner at Ernst & Young from 1990-1993. He also served as Chairman of the Canadian Auditing and Assurance Standards Board from 1990-91. Between 1993 and 1999, he was Director of Audit Standards and then Director of Strategic Programs for the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (now CPA Canada).
From October 1999 until June 2014 Jim worked for the International Federation of Accountants where he managed the operations of the four standard setting boards operating under the auspices of IFAC. He is a member of the IFRS Advisory Council (2007-2013) and was Chairman of the International Professional Practices Framework Oversight Council of the Institute of Internal Auditors (2010-2013). He has served as a member of the Canadian Auditing and Assurance Oversight Council and is currently a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors. He was also a long time member of the Canadian Audit and Accountability Foundation.
