My Fellowship

My Canadian placement:

Office of the Auditor General (OAG) of Canada.

My Canadian audit team:

I was part of a team auditing IT procurement, led by Director Joanna Murphy.

My most valuable learning:

Teamwork skills to work well with others during conversations, projects, meetings or other collaborations will be useful to me in the future.

How my Canadian colleagues and mentors helped me:

My Canadian colleagues and mentors were really helpful. They gave me a lot of support in both work and daily life.

What I enjoyed most:

I appreciated the working environment at OAG Canada. People were professional, friendly and the office was environmentally friendly.

My audit plan:Municipal Solid Waste Management in Da Nang City

I developed my audit plan project with the guidance of my mentors, Principal Nicholas Swales of OAG Canada and CAAF Associate John Affleck.

The connection to my country’s development priorities:

Recommendations from my planned audit are expected to enhance the Da Nang government’s ability to manage solid waste, especially in the context of the recent approval of the National Strategy on Integrated Management of Solid Waste, in which Vietnam commits to collect, transport and treat 100% of non-household waste by 2025 and 85% of household waste by 2025 in urban areas. The audit supports several Sustainable Development Goals: #11, Sustainable Cities and Communities; #12, Responsible Consumption and Production; and #16, Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. In addition, it contributes to the achievement of SDG 5, Gender Equality, by encouraging the participation of the local Women’s Unions in waste classification.

How CAAF and my host office helped:

Mentoring, the challenge sessions and the training courses provided by CAAF and my host office helped me form a logical audit plan. They also proposed ideas and opinions to improve the content of the audit plan.

The skills and knowledge I improved by developing this plan:

Time management is probably the most important skill that I learned from the process of developing this audit plan. In addition, information gathering techniques are what I will definitely apply in future work.

My future impact:

The new knowledge I’m most excited to share with my colleagues:

I am excited to share with my colleagues all the courses I learned at CAAF and OAG Canada. These topics include root cause analysis, audit topic selection, how to write effective audit reports, and more.

The difference I hope to make:

With the knowledge on performance audit that I learned from the Fellowship, I will suggest audit topics which are hot issues such as environmental pollution, gender equality, etc., to my office. I believe it will contribute to Vietnam’s sustainable development strategies.

My professional goals:

I hope to become a competent performance auditor and share my knowledge of performance audit when I return to my SAI as a graduate Fellow.

My Experience

The most Canadian thing I did was…

eating a classic BeaverTails pastry with cinnamon and sugar.

What surprised me most when I arrived in Canada was…

Canadians saying “thank you” and “sorry” too often.

My favourite cultural experience in Canada was…

having Canadian Thanksgiving at my friend’s house.

What I’ll miss most about Canada is…

Sophie, Connie, and their family.

Something few Canadians know about my country is…

Vietnam’s population is around 95 million people.

My Fellowship experience in one sentence:

My Fellowship experience is valuable and unforgettable.

My Fellowship in a single word:

Valuable.

Now that I have completed the Fellowship…

I am willing to share the knowledge that I learned with my colleagues and the next Fellows.
