John Zabos
John Zabos CPA, CA is an independent assurance and advisory consultant with extensive experience leading complex, high-risk audits and public sector evaluations across Canada, particularly in healthcare, Indigenous affairs, performance measurement, and governance. He is known for combining strong technical judgment with clear, engaging communication for decision‑makers and the public.
After completing studies in economics and business with great distinction, John served with the Office of the Auditor General of Alberta from 2012 to 2024. With the OAG, he served as Principal and Engagement Leader for the large, complex, and high-risk health portfolio and lead the OAG’s Internal Practice Review for Performance Audits. Since 2024, John has worked in private practice supporting a wide range of clients including Auditors General, crown corporations, regulators, and public agencies on improving efficiency and effectiveness, oversight, risk‑based value‑for‑money audits, and the implementation of recommendations.
John has presented at national conferences on topics ranging from risk detection to data visualization to audit practice innovation. He was the recipient of CPA Alberta’s Early Achievement Award and he was honoured to be selected for the inaugural class of the Canadian Audit & Accountability Foundation’s Emerging Leaders.
